Why drinking water when you wake up matters

After several hours of sleep, the body naturally wakes in a mildly dehydrated state. During the night, water continues to be lost through breathing, sweating, and normal metabolic processes, but fluid intake stops while we sleep. Starting the day with water helps restore fluid balance and supports many of the physiological processes that depend on adequate hydration.

Water makes up approximately 50–60% of total body weight, and it is essential for maintaining bodily homeostasis, supporting cellular function, and transporting nutrients and metabolic by-products throughout the body.

Because hydration status is closely linked to daily fluid intake, small changes in water consumption can quickly influence measurable hydration markers in the body, such as urine concentration and urine volume.

Hydration and Body Function

Water plays a fundamental role in maintaining normal physiological function. It helps regulate body temperature, transport substances between cells, and support the functioning of major organs including the brain and heart.

Adequate hydration is also important for maintaining the body’s fluid environments, such as blood plasma, lymph, and mucous membranes. When fluid intake is insufficient, problems can occur in multiple systems, including digestion, kidney function, joint lubrication, and skin health.

Research on hydration biomarkers shows that when daily water intake changes, the body rapidly adapts. For example, increases in water intake lead to lower urine concentration and higher urine volume, indicating improved hydration status.

These physiological responses demonstrate how closely hydration status reflects daily drinking habits.

Hydration, Brain Function, and Sleep

Hydration status may also influence cognitive processes and sleep-related outcomes. Sleep and water intake are both essential biological requirements for human health and performance.

In a controlled crossover study of healthy adults, researchers monitored hydration and sleep over multiple days using wearable sleep sensors. While mild dehydration did not significantly change overall sleep outcomes, greater water intake was positively associated with longer REM sleep, longer total sleep duration, and higher sleep efficiency in participants who became mildly dehydrated.

REM sleep is particularly important because it plays a role in brain health, cognitive processing, and emotional regulation.

Other controlled laboratory research using polysomnography (the gold-standard method of sleep measurement) has shown that mild dehydration does not necessarily reduce sleep quantity or quality in healthy young adults, although dehydration is known to influence mood, fatigue, and cognitive performance during waking hours.

Together, these findings suggest that maintaining adequate hydration throughout the day may support optimal brain and physiological functioning.

Starting the day with water is a simple way to restore fluid balance after overnight fluid loss and support the body’s normal regulatory processes.

Morning hydration may help:

Water consumption in the morning can therefore act as a practical starting point for maintaining adequate hydration throughout the day.

A practical approach is to drink a glass of water shortly after waking, allowing the body to rehydrate before caffeine, food, or daily activity begins.

Establishing small habits like this can help maintain consistent hydration levels, which support overall physiological function and wellbeing.
